George Andrews, CEO

George Andrews comes to the Alberta Cancer Foundation from NAIT, where he has been since 2004, as Vice-President, External Relations and Chief Development officer. In that role he led a team of more than 200 staff and was the driving force in the development of the NAIT branding, government relations and fundraising strategies. He has personally led significant capital campaigns and has developed leading-edge social media campaigns at NAIT. He has also worked very closely with the President’s office in the development of the multi-year strategic plan for the institution. Previous to NAIT, Mr. Andrews was the fundraising leader for the United Way Capital Region. An alumnus of the University of Alberta (BA) and Royal Roads University (MA), he is in the process of completing his Doctorate in Business Administration in Higher Education Management from the University of Bath.”

Thomas Hodson - Chair

Tomas Hudson

Mr. Hodson has extensive experience working in highly competitive technology sectors in more than 70 countries around the world, with a primary focus on the USA, Western Europe, India, China and the Middle East. Throughout his global career, Mr. Hodson has served as a Chief Executive Officer in private equity and public companies including the Tiger Calcium Corporation (current), Skyline Group of Companies and SMART Technologies.

As President and CEO of SMART Technologies, Mr. Hodson created and executed a global expansion strategy and built the structure and culture to achieve success to grow the revenue from $200 million per year to $800 million per year over a 5 year period, delivering record profits and operating efficiency.

Prior to his role at SMART Technologies, Mr. Hodson also obtained world class management training, strategic leadership skills and best practices development during 16 years with global industry leader, Procter & Gamble.

Mr. Hodson holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Queen’s University School of Business with a concentration in Strategy in Finance. He is also an internationally published author on the subject of building customer focused organizations with the release of the business book, 'Winning with Today's Customer' published by John Wiley &Sons in 2006.

Christopher Burrows, CA - Vice Chair 

Our Leader - Christoper Burrows

Mr. Burrows has an extensive resume of experience in a senior financial role. His current role is Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer with AutoCanada where he oversees a team responsible for financial functions including controllers, treasury, tax, financial risk and enterprise reporting, as well as human resources, information technology, strategic planning and regulatory compliance.

Prior to this position, Mr. Burrows was Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of K-Bro Linen Systems, a publicly traded company specializing in providing laundry and linen services to industries such as healthcare and hospitality. During this time, Mr. Burrows was responsible for all financial, administrative and corporate services functions including controllers, treasury, tax, financial risk and enterprise reporting, information technology, human resources, strategic planning and legal and regulatory compliance. Prior to that, Mr. Burrows was the Vice-President Finance, Administration & Tax with Stuart Olson (formerly The Churchill Corporation), a publicly traded construction and contracting company.

Mr. Burrows holds a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Commerce degrees from the University of Alberta and a Masters of Accounting degree from the University of Saskatchewan.

Mr. Burrows is a Chartered Accountant, a US (Illinois) Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Human Resource Professional. He is also accredited as a Certified Director by the Institute of Corporate Directors

Jordan Hokanson

Jordan Hokanson was appointed as an Alberta Cancer Foundation Trustee in 2014.

As President of HCI Ventures, Jordan comes from an entrepreneurial family that believes integrity is the foundation for good business. HCI Ventures Ltd. is an established land investment company that has been providing land solutions to farmers since 2005. Jordan is also President of Hokanson Capital - a private investment firm that focuses on real estate and agricultural investing.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario, an MBA from the University of Alberta, and a Petroleum Engineering Technology diploma from NAIT. A recognized community leader, Jordan is a Board Member and vice-chair of the Telus World of Science Edmonton and Member of Board of Directors of BOMA Edmonton.

Dr. Sandip Lalli, FCPA, ICD.D

With a global career that has taken Dr. Sandip Lalli, FCPA, ICD.D from Alberta to Singapore and many other countries along the way, Sandip was the President and Chief Executive Officer with Keystone Excavating Ltd, a 35 year leading company in Alberta’s Residential and Commercial construction industry.

Sandip holds an Institute of Corporate Directors, ICD.D, a Doctorate in Business Administration degree, a Master’s degree and is a Fellow Chartered Professional Accountant. Previous roles held by Sandip include her role as Operational Business Risk Advisor, Asia Pacific for a United States Multi-National organization based in Singapore; Founder, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of a Calgary-headquartered industrial gas manufacturing firm; and a number of financial management positions in the United States with a multinational.

Andrea McManus

Andrea McManus joined the Alberta Cancer Foundation as a Trustee in 2013.

Andrea is known for her passionate belief in philanthropy and her value of the nonprofit sector in Canadian society. She is President of The Development Group in Calgary and has worked with, trained and educated organizations and fundraisers throughout North America, the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, and Egypt. A highly strategic thinker, Andrea and her team work with organizations that span the nonprofit sector and are particularly dedicated to building long-term and sustainable capacity that is firmly anchored in philanthropic culture that permeates all levels of the organization.

A leader in the nonprofit sector locally, nationally, and internationally, Andrea was the first person outside of the United States to hold the position of Chair of the International Board (2011-12) of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

She has sat on numerous local and national initiatives to strengthen the Canadian nonprofit sector including the Imagine Canada Ethical Code Advisory Committee, Canada Revenue Agency’s Charities Technical Issues Working Group and as founding Board Chair of the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations. Along with being a Trustee with the Alberta Cancer Foundation, she is currently a Trustee for Student Energy.

Andrea was recognized by the AFP Calgary Chapter as the 2007 Outstanding Fundraising Professional Award. She is an AFP Master Teacher and contributing author to four books on nonprofit management and fundraising, including ‘Excellence in Canadian Fundraising’, the first book published on fundraising in Canada for Canadian fundraisers

Matthew Parliament MD FRCPC (Ex Officio)

Our Leader - Matthew Parliament

Matthew Parliament MD FRCPC is the Interim Senior Medical Director, CancerControl Alberta. He concurrently holds the roles of Facility Medical Director at the Cross Cancer Institute, and Edmonton Zone Clinical Department Head, Oncology. Prior to this he was the Section Head, Radiation Oncology at the Cross Cancer Institute. He also holds a Special Continuing Appointment as Professor in the Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, at the University of Alberta.

Dr. Parliament obtained his MD degree (magna cum laude) from the University of Ottawa, where he also completed postgraduate training as a radiation oncologist.

Besides having an active clinical practice treating patients with genitourinary cancers, Dr. Parliament has an active research program. He has been a committee member or chair of numerous professional and scientific committees and advisory groups over the years and is a Past President of the Canadian Association of Radiation Oncology.

Leigh-Anne Palter

Leigh-Anne Palter

Leigh-Anne was appointed as an Alberta Cancer Foundation Trustee in 2016.

Leigh-Anne is a senior Executive with demonstrated expertise within regulated and unregulated utility companies. A persuasive leader with a reputation as an exceptional relationship manager and demonstrated success in leading sensitive projects which require diplomacy, strategic communication and influencing skills.

Leigh-Anne is known for the ability to provide effective solutions to complex situations. A trusted advisor to Board members, CEO, peers, investors, government and other stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions in Canada and the United States.

Gelaine Pearman

Gelaine Pearman

Gelaine was appointed as an Alberta Cancer Foundation Trustee in 2016.

Gelaine has been Chair at the Breast Cancer Supportive Care Foundation since January 2013. As Chair, made financial sustainability and clinic/program growth strategic priorities. Elevated the Fund Development Committee to Board level making fund raising a top priority. In two years, BCSCF has gone from a deficit position to a surplus budget. Top fundraiser of more than 80 charities in the 2014 Scotiabank Charity Challenge, raising over $180,000. For clinic/program growth, focused on physician recruitment and marketing with a resulting 12% growth in new patient seen in 2014. Gelaine served as Vice-Chair, Chair Governance Committee, Chair Ethics Committee, member of the Transition Committee, and member of the Recruitment and ED search committee.

Rory J. Tyler

Rory Tyler

Rory was appointed as an Alberta Cancer Foundation Trustee in 2016.

Rory Tyler is a Senior Client Partner in Korn Ferry’s Calgary office, and a member the firm’s Global Industrial Market, with a specific focus on the energy sector, as well as the Global Financial Market. He has conducted dozens of successful searches at the C-suite and Board of Directors levels.

With deep expertise in the energy and financial services industries, Mr. Tyler’s background enables him to provide his clients strategic executive recruitment and talent management guidance.

Mr. Tyler has nearly two decades of experience in the financial services sector, serving as a member of the Board of Directors and a Senior Officer of a publicly-traded investment management firm until February 2004. Prior to this, he spent more than 15 years in the investment banking business, most recently based in Calgary as Managing Director and Co-Head of the Canadian Energy & Power practice of Merrill Lynch. Mr. Tyler also has a background in Engineering, having worked for several years in this capacity for Chevron.

Mr. Tyler is currently a member of the Major Donor’s Cabinet of the United Way of Calgary. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Alberta Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service Foundation (“STARs”) and served as Chair of the Executive Committee of the Institute of Corporate Directors, Calgary Chapter.

Mr. Tyler holds a Master’s in Business Administration Degree (with Honors) from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor’s Degree (with Distinction) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta.
