Alberta Cancer Foundation

It is because of committed support in 2011-12 from individual donors, event organizers and participants, that we are able to make this vision possible. Last year alone we invested $28.3 million in care, prevention, screening and research across the province, for a total of nearly $110 million over the last five years. As the largest single funder of research in Alberta, we invest more than an average $15 million a year to support world-class cancer researchers.

The Alberta Cancer Foundation is committed to making sure that the money we invest has a transformational impact on the things that are important to Albertans earlier detection of cancer, better treatments, better survival rates and better quality of life. More than 2,000 Albertans are also participating in more than 200 clinical trials across the province spanning all cancer types that will evaluate effectiveness of future ways to prevent, diagnose, treat, or manage cancer.

New technologies and the pace of discovery are leading us towards personalized medicine that will reduce side effects and help more people survive. Investment in clinical and translational research, medical imaging and biobanking continues to increase. The year was also marked by a number of research highlights and treatment breakthroughs that you can read about in this report.

Our focused approach to research investment will be increasingly driven by the potential for better patient outcomes, high clinical impact, and scientific quality.

Throughout Alberta, the funds we raised gave those newly diagnosed and living with cancer access to patient navigators, a valuable resource in easing the complex cancer journey.

Your dollars allowed us to deliver 7500 Alberta Cancer Foundation Patient Journals to people newly diagnosed with cancer, allowing them to manage their care. We also helped patients and families in financial need during treatment in 2011/12 we dispersed more than $750,000 for expenses such as medication, accommodation and food.

Our Report to Donors reflects the transformational impact the Alberta Cancer Foundation and our donors are making right here in Alberta. We value integrity and know that by staying accountable and transparent, we are fulfilling a steadfast commitment to our donors. Moving forward, we will continue to strive to improve efficiency so your donations make an even greater impact.

Though we take great pride in our accomplishments this year, we know that we must continue to push the pace of discovery until Albertans can lead lives free from cancer. More people are living cancer free than ever before. Thank you for contributing to the outcomes that matter to Albertans: better cancer treatments and treatment outcomes, improved quality of life, enhanced survivorship and reduced incidence of cancer. We know something can be done about cancer and with you by our side, we will do it.
