History

The University of Alberta Engineering Head Shave dates back to 2003 when Ron Wicentowich, father of Gary and Graeme Wicentowich (Electrical Engineering 2006, Mechanical Engineering 2008) was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on February 11, 2004.

Louis Bezuidenhout, a past Engineering Students’ Society (ESS) executive and friend of the Wicentowich family, organized Razored for Ron, a charity head shave. On November 1, 2003, Razored for Ron raised over $12,500 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation and featured 36 participants. This included the three-year-old cousin of the Wicentowich brothers, who was the youngest person ever to participate in an Alberta Cancer Foundation sponsored head shave. A large number of engineering students, including ESS executive, were involved in the event.

In 2004, the first Engineering Head Shave, as we now know it, was organized. Much of the organization of the event was based on Razored for Ron. Overall, the 1st Annual Engineering Head Shave and Engineering Hair Dye raised $13,064 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, far surpassing their original goal of $5,000.

The Engineering Head Shave has become an annual event proudly put on by the Engineering Students’ Society at the University of Alberta.

To date, the Engineering Head Shave has raised over $405,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation to invest in a better future for patients and their families at the Cross Cancer Institute.

The Maple Leaf Athletic Club (MLAC) Fundraiser 2023 @ Various Arenas
Jan 12 – Mar 1 all-day

The Maple Leaf Athletic Club’s  first Hockey Fights Cancer pink game was in November 2014 and was hosted by the REM 15AA team. They raised over $14,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation and personally presented the cheque and have the honor of having their names on the donors wall at the Cross Cancer Institute. The funds raised were done so by all 19 players who worked hard for the cause as many of them had family members who were fighting cancer or lost someone close to them.

Since then, the MLAC Executive have made it mandatory for each team to allocate one regular season game to Hockey Fights Cancer and we encourage the players, coaches and parents to participate in raising funds. 100% of the funds raised at the games are donated back to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Last year our 9 teams raised $59,805 after not having our Pink Games for 2 years due to Covid. We also present 1 of our 9 teams our Pink Game trophy, it goes to the team that raises the most for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Thanks to everyone who will help us again this year.

Donations for the event can be made through The Maple Leaf Athletic Club (MLAC) Fundraiser 2023 (onecause.com)
