Sitting at Timmies my head was swirling with the words “Hodgkins Lymphoma stage 4”. My mom had just shared with me that she was diagnosed with this, and would begin chemo soon. Often times when a friend or colleague shares this devastating news, our hearts go out to them…but sometimes we don’t think it will reach us. Unfortunately, though it has become more and more common someone we know in our sphere of influence is touched by cancer. According to the Alberta Cancer Foundation 58 Albertans everyday hear the words “You’ve got cancer.”
As caregivers, family members and friends watch a loved one fight an incredibly tough journey, we feel helpless in not being able to do more to support and help them through this. However, we can be thankful that over time medical research has improved greatly, and we know miracles can happen. It is so great now to know that every year 600 Albertans survive and beat cancer, that they wouldn’t have such great odds had it been 25 years ago.
However, this is largely in part possible because of donors and all of us who make it financially possible to create awareness and research, to not only find cures, but medical breakthroughs.
In honor of my mom, I am shaving my head to raise proceeds so that greater research can be actioned in providing better advanced screening. My belief is if we can have more advanced resources that go towards prevention and protection, we can save more lives. I thank you in advance for joining with me in my cause, and honoring my mom through this difficult journey.
