As the official fundraising partner for all 17 cancer centres in Alberta, including the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, we are uniquely positioned to accelerate breakthroughs and bring results to patients faster.
We do not exist to raise money. We raise money as a means to an end. We ignite cancer research through the support of our donors. We invest your dollars with a clear line of sight to patient outcomes. Our strategy is to invest in initiatives that provide real-life returns. We measure the return on investment in results, outcomes and impact.
Clinicians, healthcare professionals, researchers, patients and families help us determine those priorities. We then “source” initiatives and programs that align with them. These will be specific investments made in transformative opportunities, foundational infrastructure, and innovations leading to improved patient outcomes due to better clinical practice and care.
The Alberta Cancer Foundation is partnering with two other organizations for an exciting new investment opportunity. The Cancer Detection Challenge is led by Alberta Innovates, and sponsored by Alberta Cancer Foundation and DynaLIFE Medical Labs. We are inviting members of the Alberta cancer technology, research and clinical communities to identify and support the development of technology to detect and diagnose cancer earlier, improving outcomes for Alberta patients with cancer.
Working in partnership with CancerControl Alberta, the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Building Excellence Program provides annual support for professional development and educational opportunities to Alberta Health Services healthcare professionals in the area of cancer care. The Building Excellence Program is designed to support opportunities that will enable healthcare professionals to enhance patient experience to world class levels at the cancer centres throughout Alberta.
The Foundation is seeking to invest in solutions that improve outcomes for Albertans facing all cancer types through earlier detection, diagnosis and risk stratification of patients. Of particular interest are opportunities using liquid biopsies and biomarkers for the earlier detection of cancer in patients. A liquid biopsy examines a sample of blood and looks for circulating biomarkers from a tumor or for pieces of DNA from tumor cells. A liquid biopsy may be used to help find cancer at an early stage, before a patient displays any symptoms. Investments must have a direct line of sight to patients and families and a clear and direct impact on patient outcomes.

We are delighted to announce the first call for the R. K. Dixon Family Award in Hematologic Oncology Research. This Program has been established on behalf of Mr. Robert (Rob) Dixon through a philanthropic gift under the estate of Kathleen M. Dixon, the widow of Mr. Dixon. Faced with a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s-Lymphoma in his early 40s, Mr. Dixon turned his personal cancer journey into remarkable dedication towards advancing cancer research and education in Alberta. As the Chairman of Project Alpha and in hopes of achieving a cancer-free future, Bob led the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s first-ever capital campaign – marking the beginning of new approaches to leveraging philanthropic support for cancer research in Alberta. Recognized widely throughout Calgary for his mantra of “attitude is everything” – and fueled with positivity no matter the circumstances – he lived each day to its fullest.
