The Cheungs

Grateful couple gives back

Peter and Florence Cheung have lived in the same modest home since 1975, a few years after he arrived to Edmonton as a labour immigrant. “It’s not fancy. We have old stuff, but that’s how we’ve been able to contribute to charity.”

The couple first met as toddlers in Hong Kong, where their families were friends. Even when they moved away, they kept in touch. So when Peter had been in Canada for a few years, a letter from Florence’s mother in China made the proposal official and started the process for Florence to join him in Edmonton.

When she arrived, Peter was working as a mechanic and had already paid off his house in the short five years he had owned it. “I don’t have a lot,” says Peter. “But I have the talent to pinch pennies.”

Every year the Cheungs’ budget includes donations to as many as 10 charities, including the Alberta Cancer Foundation. They have also left the Alberta Cancer Foundation in their Will.

Gifts in a Will not only help individuals or families reach their own charitable goals, but they allow charities like the Alberta Cancer Foundation to continue pushing progress and discovery, right here at home.

“I feel that I am really blessed with my health and by being in Canada--giving to charity is our way of saying thank you,” says Peter.
