Alberta’s largest cycling fundraiser draws 1,255 Riders in the 11th annual event, cycling over 200 kilometres in two days and supporting breakthrough cancer research and care at the Alberta Cancer Foundation and 15 other centers across Alberta.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
CALGARY, August 17, 2019 – The Enbridge® Ride to Conquer Cancer® presented by Evraz announced 1,255 Riders helped raise $5.9 million for the Alberta Cancer Foundation as the 11th annual Ride commenced in Calgary on Saturday. In 11 years, the Alberta Ride has raised over $80.9 million to support breakthrough cancer research, clinical trials, enhanced care and the discovery of new cancer therapies at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Cross Cancer Institute and 15 other centres across Alberta. The Alberta Ride is the province’s largest cycling fundraising and Canada’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event.
“Today, the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer honours 11 years of creating more moments for Albertans facing cancer,” said Ellen Wright Terrill, Interim CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
“We are so grateful for this inspirational community of Riders, volunteers, Crew members, donors and partners who are dedicated to powering progress in cancer research, treatment and care. Dollars raised will continue to support the 17 cancer centres across the province and provide Albertans with improved outcomes and real-life returns,” added Wright Terrill.
The annual event draws thousands of participants and brings together communities of cancer survivors, cyclists and supporters who train and fundraise for months in order to participate in the two-day, 200-kilometre Ride throughout Alberta. With events also in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia, the Ride event series has raised over $446.3 million for cancer research, treatment, education and care programs across the country since 2008 and is Canada’s largest peer-to-peer fundraiser.
Leah Meier participates after completing treatment for stage 4 Colorectal cancer this past February. She says, “As little as five years ago, my family and friends may have been riding in my honour. Now, due to research, I’m riding with them. Don’t underestimate the power and importance of fundraising and events like The Ride. Research leads to a cure – if people didn’t participate in The Ride before me, I may not be here,” Leah Meier, cancer survivor and first-year Rider from Taber, Alberta.
Since 2011, Enbridge has been the title sponsor of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. Collectively, 2,500 Enbridge employees, their friends and their families have raised over $9.5 million for the Ride across Canada. Sponsorship funds donated by Enbridge allow dollars raised by Ride participants to support cancer programs at the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
